I want to take my boat out tomorrow but I have a little problem. I removed the upper gear housing from my volvo penta sp 290 outdrive to fix a raw-water intake problem. Good news is that I fixed that problem, bad news is that my shifting is screwed up. I had to disconnect the shift mechanism from the upper gear housing as well as the shift locking plate to remove the housing. I put it back on, but I must have done something wrong. Now, the prop spins when I rev in neutral, the throttle is extremely difficult to put in reverse, and when it goes in reverse the RPMs jump from 1000 to 3000 violently. There is no "easy" reverse so to speak. Any idea how I hooked this up wrong??? Thanks in advance!!!
The throttle was in neutral when the upper gear housing was pulled off and put back on... It didn't say anything in Clymers or Seloc's manuals about throttle position when removing the upper gear housing
