I have a 4.3L Mercruiser ...

Drive Lube is quoted as "High Performance Lubricant 92-802854A1"
This is a blue/green colour

I have a few tubes of Quicksilver "Super Duty Gear Lubricant 92-13783A24"
Which is a brown colour
The tubes state "... for use in all Mercruiser Stern Drives"

Is it safe to top up with the stuff from the tubes ? .......... it would be mixing oils .... but obviously both intended for outdrives.

Anybody know.

No, DO NOT MIX. They are completely different.
Get the Hi Performance gear lube.

Re: Urgent Q on Drive Lube

I have seen this question asked a dozen times. The concensus seems to be that no do not use it. Go and buy the correct lube. As expensive as your outdrive is a 12 dollar quart of lube is nothing. I imagine this doesn't answer to the logic and most "correct" answer you wanted. The correct lube isn't brown and I suppose if you are mixing that means you are using lube to need to fill it up in the first place. On my 4.3 Mercruiser, the carrier seal needed replacing at 100 hours of engine use. It is included in the 200 hour recommended service so that is what I did. Using lube is a bit of a built in warning system. Mine went from a bit each use for a couple seasons to a full resoivoir full worth in no time flat. First you try to tell yourself it is an airbubble from last seasons winterization and lube change but that isn't the case after a top off or two.
