So a few weeks back we purchased a boat and tandem trailer that came originally from the US. I spoke to the licensing authorities, in our case SGI in Saskatchewan and was informed that any trailer built after 1 Jan 1985 and rated over 3000#, must have two brake axles. Just a heads up for anyone wanting to do the same.Always check with local licensing authorities in your province or territory. Luckily in my situation the idler axle already has a bracket to accept a drum brake unit, so it just means running some extra brake lines and changing the hubs over to brake drums.

And every state has different laws about brakes on trailers, and too many trailers are manufactured and sold without even being legal here in the first place.
My trailer is from 1964, who knows how illegal it is with parts that need to be updated. :D
