recently saw on a web site that you can register
a boat once with the USCG and never have to worry
about state registration fees.... is this correct?
M.Y.

M.Y.
My father does that in Virginia. He has a battlewagon that is in a slip and only used in open water (no inland lakes) but he does fish some of the big rivers off the Chesapeak Bay. He doesn't have to have the registration numbers on the bow or the registration sticker or the fee.

Re: USCG boat registration

Depends on who controls your waterways. State of Alaska just certified a boating safety program that requires state registration. Before that we always just went with CG certification. Now the state registration complies with CG regs, so no CG is necessary....Makes my head hurt...

kev

Hey M.Y.
I was thinken, call the old man and find out more about this. Guess what "If it sounds to good to be true it usually is". He told me the paper work is almost as painful as a leak you can't find. Cost is up there too. You can check out at U.S. Coast Guard - National Vessel Documentation Center web site.

Re: USCG boat registration

M. Y.,
One of the few times I've seen some one local. I used to have my boat in Irondequoit Bay, moved my boat to Sodus Bay since I now live in Ontario.
You're correct, it is to good to be true. :( If you have a documented vessel (about $600 to document a vessel) you don't need to display the NY state numbers or registration sticker on the hull. NY state still requires that you to have the boat registered with DMV and pay the registration fees. I know this from being a Vessel Examiner in the USCG Auxiliary in your area.
These rules vary from state to state. If you have questions get a copy of the Federal Regulations and State Regulations or contact your local USCG, USCG Aux or marine patrol.
