I posted earlier that I am having a heck of a time draining (siphoning) my stainless steel gas tank in my 1983 16ft Invader with a Volvo Penta 125A/270. I can't get in through the filler cap and the sending unit isn't reachable. The fuel has probably been in at least 4 years. Your comments about the anti siphoning valve on the fuel line as to why it won't siphon are probably right on.

In the meantime, as soon as I get my rebuilt carb back, if the tank problem hasn't been worked out, Can I use a 6 gallon or larger portable gas tank safely? What drawbacks to using the portable tank, if any are there?

The tank for an inboard must be vented to the exterior of the boat. A plastic tank in the engine bay is flat out dangerouse .
The heat factor combined w/the plastic tanks ventalation could easily cause an explosion in the inclosed engine bay.
Get a universal electric fuel pump to remove the fuel from you tank and save your boat, possibly yourself, and others.
Ventalation is crusial !!!

If you can't put fuel in, the tank vent is probably plugged up. Many of the older vent fittings had a screen in them that would corrode and block them off.

Don S, it isn't that I can't put fuel in, it's that I can't put a hose down the filler tank hose into the fuel tank because before the filler hose goes into the tank, it makes 2 90 degree turns.

Then install a proper fill fitting with new hose to the tank so you can. Don't put any splices in the fill hose.

siphon the fuel using the line that feeds the fuel pump, disconnect at the pump and splice your siphon hose to it with a straight fitting. Make sure you have an airtight fit between the 2 hoses so it'll siphon.
