Hello.

I am going to purchase a used boat and I want to make sure I have a "sale receipt" of some kind as I will need to have the boat inspected in order to obtain a title (selling / buying are different states).

Does anyone have a form or suggestion where I could download one for this purpose?

Thanks
Joe

Traditionally a bill of sale is what most states require for transfer of ownership, along with a signed title (if your state has titles for boats). The bill of sale doesn't usually have to look glamorous. I have done several on a blank sheet of paper with a ball point pen. Basically need to mention the seller by name transfers the year/make/model/HIN boat to you, for what ever dollar amount, on such and such a date. Then have him sign it. But thats my state.

You should check with your state to see exactly what they require. May need a notarized bill of sale, or some other forms filled out. If they don't require anything fancy. You can find free bill of sale templates specifically for boats by doing a google search. You may also be able to find a generic bill of sale form if you search through the on-line forms in MS word.

Good luck on your new purchase!

put as much detail in as you can, including about the motor and trailer if there is one: year, serial number, etc.
In many states you register the trailer with "motor vehicles" and the boat with "natural resources." Consider seperate bills of sale, so if each department requires an original, you can comply.

All good advice.

If your state has titles, there should be a place on the seller's title to sign it over to you.

+1 on separate bills of sale. Also a third for the O/B if O/B powered and your home state titles/registers O/Bs. Best to check with your local requirements as already stated. I recently went through an out of state transfer - title state to non-title state, using bill of sale only. For me it was painless because I did have all the paperwork except the title. Some states have forms you can print on their websites.

PM your email address and I will send you a standard Bill of Sale.

In the meanwhile, get the HIN, trailer and motor, if OB numbers and descriptions, and all accessories included list.

Some states also require the sellers DL#.

I would check with the proper authorities in the state you plan to register the boat in. For instance,in Illinois the DNR does boat regs, but the DMV does the trailer regs, and they will make it very hard for you to register the boat or trailer without TITLES.
Don't expect much pertenant info here without at least telling us what state you live in.

Not knowing what states are involved makes it hard to give the best advice....

My state likes to see something like this.
This is in addition to the registration card and title if applicable.

Feel free to copy and print.

A copy for each the buyer and seller is nice.

I also like to make note of the sellers/buyers vehicle license plate.
Someone may give you bogus info, but they usually are dumb enough to drive their own car.

I just bought a boat recently. This is the official form of "Bill of sell" in Canada. Maybe you'd find it useful...
