Would it harm anything to use my 24 volt trolling motor with one 12 volt battery. It will only be for a couple trips while my 12 volt TM gets some warranty repairs (marina estimated a week and a half before they could get to it). There is not enough room in my boat or the correct wiring to set up a 24 volt system. Im hoping I can get by with using my 24 volt TM with one 12 volt battery without harming the battery or trolling motor.

Thanks.

If the speed control is pulse modulated it probably wont work, fishhead. Depends on the make and design of the controller.

Running a 24 volt motor on 12 volts is a very bad idea- the low voltage will result in very high operating temperatures and the motor will fry. That's a good way to ruin a motor very quickly.

Go buy a $35 cheapie battery from Wal-Mart and run it with the battery you already have. Sure beats destroying an otherwise good 24V motor.

UFM82

What UFM82 says. Goes against what you might think, lower voltage should not be a problem, but it is for motors.

Not a problem with your wires because any wires that support a 12v tm will also support a 24v tm as well, but not the reverse. 24v wiring will NOT support 12v applications. Your wires are for 12v so they will work for both tm voltages.

Re: using 24 volt TM with one 12 volt battery

all posters are correct(dont do it)but, they failed to mention how the motor/controller works.see, at the factory they inject smoke into the motor and electronics.this smoke is what makes it all work together.if you were to use it at a lower voltage you could heat up the motor and let all the smoke out.and everyone knows that once you let the smoke out,it quits working! :D
