Using a 20 hp Johnson on a 1984 Bayliner Capri

The boat already has an I/O but I'm interested in using a 20 hp Johnson in order to run it on state waters. Is it possible to attach this motor to the back of the boat? If so, how? If anyone has successfully accomplished this I would greatly appreciate your advice and pictures.

you would need some sort of brakett to attach the OB. and then figure out a way to reach its controls and get gas / 12 volts to it.
I do not think it is a good idea-the boat was not made to have an small OB mounted on the transom.

This thread has a great example of a kicker mounted on an I/O steerable with the main motor http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=450439&p=3049428

If yours has an integral transom/swin platform it wouldn't be practical. If it looks like the link above, buy an outboard motor bracket off Iboats and go for it. For that boat a 20 HP is wayyyy to large. A 8 or 9.9 would be a better fit.

I figured a 20 hp would be faster and more powerful than a 9.9. What would be the pros/cons?

Mine has a swim platform so I assume that it is an integral transom. Why would it not be practical? What do you suggest I do in order to run it on a state lake with a 20hp max?

Hey VR...since a small outboard isn't going to be able to plane your boat, that means it will just be moving along at displacement speed. That being the case, a 20 probably won't move you much faster than an 8/9.9/15 but will weigh more and use more gas.

1) The transom may not be able to hold that big of motor per the capacity plate
2) You may comprimise the structure of the transom where you hang it because there may not be enough structrual support to properly hold it.

I wouldn't go higher than a 9.9hp. The last thing you want is that 20hp to break off. Plus 20 hp may not even get you on plane. My suggestion, and I'm not trying to be a smart alec, is to get a boat more suited for those lakes. I'd hate to see you risk your safety over it. Plus ou don't want to go over the hp or weight that the USCG plate says. Just my .02 Good luck!

Depends on the size of the lake and the size of your Capri :p

Another note (back to gas motors), a lot of the kicker brackets have a HP limit of 15. A 15 would be ideal because typically the 9.9s and 15s from most of the manufacturers are the same weight. So you get the extra 5HP with no weight sacrifice.

I said "integral transom /swim platform"....meaning one in the same. If that's the case, a proper bracket won't fit. Post a pic so we know what we're dealing with. A Bayliner "Classic" series is very doable, but some of the Capris are "Euro Style" and they are not adaptable to kicker brackets.

20 HP will barely reach "hull speed" on a boat that size, so the boat won't go any faster than a 5 HP motor at full throttle, and it certainly won't plane the boat.

A Minn Kota electric will push the boat around, but not as fast as a kicker, and it will require an extra big battery and lots of charging when you get home.

I guess you need to tell us what your objective is. If you only want to go out a few times on a HP limited lake, the most cost effective solution may be to buy a second boat - a little aluminum fishing boat with a 9.9. That's what i did!

cheaper than buying a boat for that lake.... perhaps you can rent one.... you may find out you don't even like the lake lol

An '84 Capri has a flat transom, and probably a swim step & ladder on the starboard side. You could mount a kicker on the port side if the transom is sound.

I've attached an image of the back of an identical Bayliner. I've also included a link to a Kicker Motor Bracket for sale on a craigslist in my area. Please check it out and let me know if its worth purchasing. http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/boa/2199279006.html
I would like to use the boat on a state lake that has a 20hp max limit. Since the boat can hold a bunch of people I wanted to take it out to joy ride (slowly) and hang out. Let the kids jump off and swim. There is also a 1991 Evinrude 15hp remote start for $650 in my area. Would that be worth buying. Thanks! You have all been very helpful.

If the Evinrude has controls....I'd say go for it.
