Using a 55 gallon tank vs. in lake

I'm trying to adjust the carburators on my '72 Johnson 65 HP. I've read that doing it with the earmuffs is worthless because there's no load. Will putting it in a cut out 55 gallon drum be enough? I'm about 15 miles from the lake and would rather get it running here as opposed to on the water. Thanks.

You should be able to adjust the idle (slow speed good enough so you don't have too many problems. You may still need to do a little fine tune at the lake. Just plan a trip for a tune run, no big deal. Do not plan a family outing with a promise of a boat ride. Shake down the rig first. Most wives will have kittens if they are a drift with a broke down boat motor.
