Using a heater instead of winterizing

I had the "privilege" of replacing a cracked block this spring due to an unusually hard freeze. I have a 22 ' Regal, kept above the water in a boat slip. I am looking at an electric heater placed in the engine compartment that auto turns on at 40 degrees. The engine is a Mercruiser 270 HP I/O. Assuming I size the heater correctly for the compartment, should this be sufficient to avoid the same problem I had last winter, freezing up the engine?
Thanks,

What do you do if there is a power failure?

Learn to drain the engine, it usually takes 15 minutes and your worries are over, power or no power.

Sounds to me like your plan is a recipe for a cracked block.

Listen to Don, he's spot on. Murphy, of Murphy's Law fame, has a special affinity for boats. If it can go wrong, it WILL.

Folks around here think Murphy was an optimist. It already is wrong!
