I have a brigs and straton power generator, and I was wondering If I could use this inside a sailboat? Assuming I attach a vent pipe to the exuhast valve, and vent the gases outside the cabin.

Would this work?

I think if the venting failed I wouldn't want to be you.Unless maybe you are a pro at that kind of thing or know one,I like living on the edge but not on this.

Just wear an oxygen supplied mask and a very good set of ear plugs.

Your best bet would be to build a cover for it and have it above deck or if your boat has an engine room with room for it.

Could you run it inside and vent the exhaust? Yes but why would you want to do something so nonpractical? The engine gets hot and there will be a fuel odor. Besides the noise the engine has to 'breath" . You need to put it outside in a waterproof container and keep everything outside except the electrical wires coming from it. Far too dangerious to have it inside with you.Air cooled engines are never made to be operated indoors.

Outside only.
My 2 cents

Outside only. Or build a seperate box inside of your engine room for it and vent that box outside.

Alot of those cheaper (briggs) gensets vibrate and dance all over the place, your probably not going to be happy with it in a boat.

It does not sound like a good idea

Not inside, somewhere were the exaust will not get into the cabin, and get a CO2 detector to be on the safe side

Even if you put it outside I would still get a CO detector, just in case you have flow into the cabin. CO poisoning is nothing to be messed with. Better to be safe than sorry ... err on the side of caution - you CAN put it inside, but it is not the best senerio ... put it outside and a CO detector inside.

I used a generator on my boat before getting a slip with shore power. I was lucky as mine came with a spark arresting muffler for the exhaust. This is something that is required by the USCG for marine use. The generator I used was a small 1850 Porter Cable. I left it on the dock as it vibrated the whole boat plus it was very noisy. Best way to go is with a Honda series generator as they have the best in regards to be quieter. DON"T use it inside the cabin as you could be endangering yourself and others. Good luck and look into inverters. That is what I used mostly before shore power. I had 3 deep cycle batteries and then used the generator to recharge them periodically.

REALLY, REALLY BAD idea.

CO (carbon monoxide) exhaust is heavier than air and "puddles". Guess where? The cockpit and cabin of a boat.

A recipe for disaster.

If you're going to use it, keep it out on the deck away fom the cockpit or cabin and any open vents.
