I've purchased a new (04) 25hp Mercury (haven't got it yet, tho) through a non-dealer. The shop is recommending using synthetic oil. Does anybody have any thoughts? Does anybody know what Mercury says, particularly regarding warranty?

Thanks

Re: Using Synthetic oil - good or bad?

I asked Mercury that same question about a month ago. I was told that they (Merc) doesn't recommend synthetic oils because they haven't done any testing with it. Their reccommendation is to use their Premium or Premium plus oils. I don't know how a synthetic would effect the warranty, but as long as an engine failure isn't caused by the oil (tought to prove) I don't see how it could be denied.

Good luck!

Congrats on the new engine. and welcome to the forum.

Break the engine in on regular TCW-3 oil, Non synthetic at 25:1 mix. then if you want to use synthetic, which I would reccomend, Use a TCW-3 certified synthetic oil during the warrenty period, then use what you want.
