Using these speakers for boating?

Several years back, a local computer company went out of business. I bought a set of Element Electronics, Model EOD5 for $50. I had great intentions at the time of using them for the patio, but it never happened. I recently moved and happened to find them in storage. I was told I could use them on my boat since they are water resistance. Thoughts?

Should be OK... for fresh water.

They are built expecting to have them get rained on. Not splashed with saltwater. Splashing with fresh water shouldn't bother them.

I doubt they are sealed well enough to survive immersion, but if you sink the boat you have bigger issues than wet speakers.

Weatherproof usually means the speakers can withstand a real humid area, not being rained on or even splashed. It states to be mounted on the WALL. And usually that means angled so rain water would not enter them. Knowing how speakers are constructed, I can't see any speaker being able to get wet and still work without any issues. So while they are weather proof (within reason) they are not waterproof. There is a difference. Does that mean you can't use them on you boat. NO it doesn't mean that. It means to mount them in some place that won't get direct water on them and they should be okay...for a few years. The cones are probably made out of polystyrene with foam edges and therefore won't absorb moisture as easily. But the voice coils still have to be assembled in the usual way to work. JMHO!
