Being former Navy, and an old tin can(destroyer) sailor, I am kinda dissappointed that the Navy chose an LPD as a tribute to 911. I would have rather seen a combat ship, say a destroyer or a criuser.

Either way though I am gratified to see her underway. CNN.com has a video of her.

The bow, I believe, is mad of salvaged steel from the RTC.

the bow section, is made of recycled steel from the Trade Center. i have seen video, of them installing the bow section.

guess this was the best they had in production at the time.

Caught a glimpse of her profile from a long distance as she made her way along the Ambrose approach to NY harbor while I was fishing Monday morning. The featureless gray hull was tough to spot even though I could see the blip on radar and knew where to look. Hoping to get onboard Saturday for the ceremony.

I wish I could be in NY for a ship tour and the ceremony... That would be really cool...
