I was going to post this in the trailer forum, but it is in the sub category of boating, so I put it here.......move it if need be.

I just bought a nice utility trailer for $300. It has nice big tires (the tires are in superb like new condition) and the bearings are good as well. I rewired it already, and the wood on it is solid all around.

I want to make some ramps for it. I was thinking of using 2 2x6's bolted face to face with the pieces ofset enough to leave a "lip" on each end to sit on the ground and on the trailer (make 2 of these). I was going to put rubber on the ends to keep the ramp from slidding. Anyone done something similar?? or have some other good ideas??

What are you going to use the ramps for? You can make your own ramp ends from steel or bolt a good size angle iron on the end and let it catch the trailer's steel frame. You have a frame all the way arount.

I have a nearly identical trailer that tilts. I use it when I want to haul misc stuff or a single atv.

Ayuh,...... I'd go with a Short piece of Angle Iron that could Lock into those Stake Pockets on the Back............

Depending on What you're trying to Load,......
I usually use some 3/4" Plywood,.......
It Bows,+ Bends slightly,... But I've yet to Break it....
My 4wheeler weighs in around 500lbs.......

I was thinking just a lawn tractor from time to time, and a host of other yard tools ............. roto tiller, wood chipper, lawn mower etc.

I mreally like the angle iron idea.

My neighbor had one like that with the angle iron and he also
made slots on each side rail to hold the ramps when not in use.
Nice clean setup.
$300.00 that was a good buy!

Re: Utility Trailer

Link I thought $300 was pretty much a steal as well.

I like the idea of holding the ramps in the siderails. Would never worry about not having them when you need them8)

Ever rent a u-hall with the slide out ramp from underneath. It's another design option you may consider.

My Buddy cut a couple pieces of channel and put on each side at the back of the trailer and made 2 ramps..the size of the with of the trailer and slid the ramps into the channels to make a tailgate... when the needs ramps he he just lifts them out, loads whatever and puts them back..good to go

Re: Utility Trailer

we just use scaffold walk boards. If you dont already have them they are probably to expensive to go buy, but if you already have them they work great.

Re: Utility Trailer

Fleet Farm and Home Depot had some aluminum ramps a couple weeks ago. Similar to the ones below, but I think they were 5' long, about $60 on sale. Just a thought.

Re: Utility Trailer

Anybody know where I can find the metal brackets that are mounted to the frame to hold the vertical 2x4's that attatch to the side rails.......My trailer is similar in size but the previous owner used 3/4 square steel and drilled them out for the vertical supports....Im looking to do something with 2x4's just like what is pictured.?

Ive tried both Lowes and HD and didnt have much luck.

They're made from 2x4x&frac14 square tube. You could get it from any steel supply place. You might try a welding shop as they may have some scrap pieces cheaper and may cut them for you, too.

Re: Utility Trailer

Trailer stake pocket is available from Northern Tool & Equipment. Item # 125504 for about $4.

Used them to replace originals on my trailer that were destroyed in an accident.
