I want to replace the prop cone on my 1972 Volvo 270 outdrive however in I see a significant discrepancy between what my boat has and the exploded views I've found on the web.

Here is a link to the exploded view of the 270 lower unit:

http://216.37.204.206/shorts/Volvo_OEM/Volvo.asp?Type=13&A=17&B=44

Mine does not have part #35A, rather the prop cone has indentations on the flat side which mate to the washer (part 36) and you bend the tabs either up into the indentations in the prop cone if you're installing the prop, or down and away from the prop cone indentations if you want to remove the prop cone and prop. I should also probably mention that my drive does not use a prop screw that is shown in the above diagram. I bought a screw at one time but found that there is nothing for it to thread into once I stick it through the prop cone...the end of the prop shaft, which is where I presume it normally screws into, is solid on my outdrive.

Here is a better link to those parts, they are just not shown in an exploded view fashion:

http://tinyurl.com/8vsg9

Here is an exact picture of what I have, and it's listed for a Volvo 250 outdrive:
http://216.37.204.206/shorts/Volvo_OEM/Volvo.asp?Type=13&A=17&B=40

Here are a couple pics of my prop and cone:

http://www.panix.com/~am_dew/270propcone.jpg
http://www.panix.com/~am_dew/270propwasher.jpg

Anyone know for sure if what I have now can be replaced by what is shown for the 270 in the uppermost diagram? Or do I have to stick with what is shown for the 250 drive? But if I do that, the prop cone part numbers for both seem to be the same and yet when I find them on the web, none of them have the indentations like my OEM one has.

Thanks!

Hard to say "Why" on anything on a 72 boat. Too many previous owners to know exactly what happened to your engine and drive.
Could be the wrong cover on the back of the outdrive and it's actually a 250 drive with a 270 cover.
The AQ130C didn't come out till 73, so who knows on your 72 boat.
Best thing to do is use the prop hardware for a 250 if you don't have a screw hole to use the 270 style cone.

Re: V/P 270 outdrive prop cone replacement?

Thanks Don. Only two owners of this boat...my dad, who bought it brand new in 1972, and myself. It's for sure a 270 drive and an AQ130C engine..bought in May 1972.

The replacement part for both the 250 and 270 cones are now the same part, so I don't have a choice of which one to buy. I'm just trying to figure out if the 270 parts will work before I spend the $60 to buy them. I may have to just buy and find out, I guess.

Re: V/P 270 outdrive prop cone replacement?

I have a 270 outdrive and when I went to buy a new prop I found that there are 2 different style 270 outdrives. One is the "drilled type" the other was not.The prop nut you cant seem to use goes thru the tip of the cone and screws into the bolt your prop slides onto.It keeps the cone from loosening up and coming off.If you tighten the cone down by sliding a screwdriver thru the slot in the side and using it as a T-handle it should be plenty tight.Hope I helped.P.S the part your missing is just there as some sort of spacer. It does not screw on.It just slides on and the cone holds it down.

Thanks. Yes, I have the drive that has the undrilled end of the prop shaft. I'm trying to figure out if the spacer ( http://tinyurl.com/9vd34 ) and the newer OEM replacement "unindented" prop cone both paired together will work on my drive. I am pretty sure it will but am hoping someone can tell me for sure.

I had the same as yours on my 270. Try eBay. I see them on there all the time. You can always do what I had to and use a nylon nut with a washer.
As you can see the cone would not have worked.
Re: V/P 270 outdrive prop cone replacement?

Ordered and rec'd the parts today...the new cone and spacer. Seemed to go on well. My only question now is do I need to bend the washer tabs up into the indentations on the spacer?

When I tightened the prop cone, the spacer turned as well, and the spacer indentations seemed to kind of lock onto the tabs when they lined up with the washer tabs. I think I will bend the tabs up anyways...hate to lose my prop!

F_inscreenname...you had a great idea...thanks. And I think it would have worked on my setup. I would probably need two large washers though to make up the space between my prop and the end of the prop spline...looks to be about a 1/4 inch between them.
