V150 lots of smoke

hiya,

I've got either an '80 or '82 V150 (I don't recall right now)... it's not oil injected, so obviously it's always been pre-mixed, fuel & dino oil (at 50:1)..

It's always been smokey at idle, but if anything it seems to me more so after decarbonizing it earlier this season with deep creep and running seafoam through with some gas.

I've done searches on this here, and seen others with V6's comment on the smoke, but it's not clear to me why these motors should be particularly smokey, especially if premix is being run.

Are they jetted particularly rich on the low end? Or is there something funny with the intake that allows fuel/oil to puddle (?).

I can't imagine how a smokey 2 stroke can be indicative of anything wearing out etc (like would be the case on 4 strokes)... or am I missing something?

I'll likely try some synthetic next season for fun... but otherwise, any thoughts?

thanks.

Bf, I have a 82 Merc 150 v6 that smokes at start up and idle,I would say if you have good compression and motor run's ok dont be concerned. One thing about the smoke is ,it's getting oil. Once i leave dock smoke clear's right up. 22 yrs old ,it's bone's are getting old.

Re: V150 lots of smoke

hi cb, no I'm not really concerned... the motor runs great, just seems to be even smokier than it used to be. Ya, it's gettin' old (aren't we all), but I don't see how that would cause it to make more smoke.

Oh, and in case anyone thinks it, it is blueish exhaust smoke, not white smoke (like from water in cylinder). Plugs look a bit on the black/oily side, but not terribly so. And all are the same. Oh, and this motor gets idled very little (on a ski boat) so it's not getting loaded up from trolling or anything like that. Smoke is not noticible except at idle, or when it makes a slight blue fog when you first take off.

Maybe it's the nature of the beast, but how can it burn the same ratio fuel/oil as other motors and make more smoke??

My 83 150 does the same thing. I tried synthetic oil but really couldn't tell that much difference.

About the only thing you get to pick from is a rich condition at idle. That leads you to look to the carb. (provided the plugs are the correct heat range)

Either a rich idle jet adjustment, or maybe a float level that has risen over time from being beat around, or a float has gotten 'heavy' from absorbing fuel.

2 stroke engines in general don't like spending alot of time at low rpms when they're new, and that feature doesn't usually improve with age. If it runs OK without stalling, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I'd be leary about making carb. adjustments.
You might pull a bowl and check the float to see if its anything obvious, but if ya get to messing around with carb. adjustments--- its pretty easy to lean it out to where it'll burn a hole in a piston too.

Re: V150 lots of smoke

ya, I'm in agreement with what's been said. My suspicion is that running the seafoam through with a few gallons of gas, cleaned up a bit of gum/varish with the net effect of making it a bit richer at idle (maybe where it was 10 years ago ?). Hence more smoke. It runs better, so my guess is that it was on the verge of being on the lean side before... ?

nope, I'm not too anxious to go into the carb's cause aside from being a bit smokey, there's no performance problem to fix. Doesn't stall or anything... higher rpm's (4K cruise or higher) is where this motor spends a lot of it's time. You don't see no smoke then!

Thanks for the input folks.

Brent
