Didn't know starcraft even made a hull that had 21 degrees deadrise, thanks to those who uploaded the brochures. I now know they came out in 78 and were offered on the holiday and ss the next year looks like the first year for a 22ft mariner v5. What other years and models was the hull offered on that could be converted to a center console. I know the hull was also offered on the islander. If you know the years for each model let me know.

How do these hulls ride compared to fiberglass deep v's and other aluminum modified v's in tight stacked 2-3ft chop?
How do they stand up in occasional salt use like 4-5weeks/year trailered and rinsed each day?
Any issues to look for specific to this hull? I already own a couple tinnys so I know what to look at in general.

I really need to get a ride in one, the problem is I'm in the wrong part of the country :( . I'm going to have to ride in one in the conditions I plan on using it before I can commit to buying one as another project. I have my doubts about their ability to slice though heavy chop due to their light weight.

as a practical matter, if ride is that much of an issue, you probably won't be happy with the ride of any tinnie due to the weight issue. look at a Grady, Bayliner Trophy, etc instead.

We had a 1979 22-foot Holiday with the V5 hull that we bought new in 1980. It was a fantastic boat, easily one of the best riding aluminum hulls I've ever ridden in. It ran much smoother than similar Holidays with the more traditional Starcraft hull. Ours had the 228hp MerCruiser (305 SBC) and it would run close to 50mph.

I just bought a 1978 Starcraft Islander V5. Still has the OMC sterndrive on it. In fact, today I noticed the exact boat is on this forum in a May 14th posting "Advise on a 1978 Starcraft Islander".

So far, I have had it out once for a test run. Motor is a Chevy 305 or 350 (still not sure but leaning towards 305) 185hp and runs excellent; however, some water is getting into the mid-section of the OMC 800 sterndrive (getting new gaskets on it as we speak).

Have not had it out in the big lake yet (Lake Michigan) but the hull was supposedly made for the ocean and rode beautiful on Manistee Lake.
