I am changing a volvo 4 cylinder to a GM 4.3 in my Regal and I'm trying to find a y pipe for the exhaust. The drive is a 290 Sp and I am trying to find a y pipe to fit. It looks like I need the Volvo number 852846. Also thought about modifying the original pipe from the 4 cylinder into a y pipe but it looks like alot of trouble to do so. Any help to source a used one would be great. Thanks

Re: V6 Exhaust

You can look on ebay, 852846. You should also keep in mind that the ypipe will have one or two idle relief holes that need to go through your transom shield. So you may need a different transom shield as well. Also, the gear ratio of your 4 cylinder geared outdrive will not match the V6 power. Have you considered these issues?

Re: V6 Exhaust

The engine that was removed was an AQ 171c with 2 Solex carbs. I think the horsepower of that engine was around 167 hp. A GM 4.3 vortex that isn't built up is around 190hp. Not sure about ratio on the drive. 2.15to 1 I think but Ill check the drive later to make sure. With this info what would be the recommended gear ratio to suit the addittional power?

Re: V6 Exhaust

That brings up another issue, the flywheel cover for the 171 will not bolt up the your 4.3ltr motor. Have you addressed that issue?

Fact is, you need everything from the motor to the outdrive to repower properly. The early 4.3 ltr motors were mated to V8 ratio drives, 1.61, for the four barrel carbed motors and 1.89 for the two barrel carbed 4.3's.

What made you think it would be easy????:)

Re: V6 Exhaust

Capt said it in his first post. It will need a transom assy too.
The GM block probably won't fit up to the bell housing.
The flywheel won't work.
Now if you find a v-8 for parts most things will match up.

Re: V6 Exhaust

I believe there is a Y pipe that has the single relief hole that is ok up to 250HP or so, but I don't know what part number it is. I suspect the AQ175A would be a good parts listing to look at... the lowest HP V6 VP setup.
The drive ratio will have to change. HP may be close, but rpm at which the power is made is quite different between the 2 motors.

Re: V6 Exhaust

Well Thanks for all the info. Alot of the later issues mentioned here have already been addressed. This is a home project started over a year ago. Forgot to mention though - this boat is twin screw and I already have one y pipe from Ebay but havent found another in good shape yet. Just looking around for another one. And yes it is not easy, had to change engine beds, cooling system with heat exchangers, bell housings, flywheels, build drive pulley's for raw water cooling pump's, changed intake manifold's with new carb's, distributors, exhaust manifolds, risers and many more concerns but having fun doing it. Not my first rebuild and I took over the project from a friend who took sick. Thanks again but I'm trying to find another y pipe -Volvo part number 852846
