So, how many of you do not end up using all your vacation days each year? I have about 6 left.. but will probably only burn 4. Plus I used 0 sick days this year.

Sean

I've NEVER used them all.

I'm in the customer service business. Customers DO NOT understand vacation-unless it's theirs.

I use every Vacation and every Sick day. The vacation days are part of my compensation, I see no reason to donate my time to the company.

Sick days, thats easy to use up with kids, as our policy here, you can burn a sick day just staying home with a sick kid.

This is the first year that they implimented a "use it or loose it" policy, but you get in trouble from the HR folks if you loose any vacation.

We have been very busy this year, so I will be on vacation the last 2 weeks of the year to burn them up, and I'm going to enjoy it :)

That might just be what is wrong with US business.

1. My employer pays me well. I see the other (vacation) as a "benefit", not a right. MY customers come first. That's why I am employed-no other reason.

2. I you cannot be counted on, you can be replaced. That's business. Foreign corp's. (especially oriental corp's) do NOT see our need for "vacation/personal" time as an asset.

3. The US "made it", in the world, by being the best. NOT by being the most unproductive.

4. This is a "world" economy now. Comply, or suffer. But, don't whine.

Re: Vacation Days

I have only used 10 sick hours since I started here, 18 months ago, for an inner ear thing. I couldn't even stand up.

You can carry 240hrs Vac, 1028hrs sick and up to 80hrs Comp time. After 1028hrs sick time it converts to Vac. After 240 vac time you use it or loose it. If you have taken 80 hrs Vac time that year already you can sell back the time to get under 240.

Right now I am at 142 vac, 132 sick and 77 comp. Once I get Sick and Vac up over 400 I will start using the Vac. I would like to keep the rest to fill in should something major happen and I can't work for a month or so.

I have to use vacation days, or the company schedules them for you, usually on a Tuesday or Wednesday, one day per week till used up.

What is a sick day?

DJ, how about we comply with the European version of "world economy"?
That would double my vacation days.

Re: Vacation Days

Use of vacation days is an "internal control" policy (not for all jobs of course). Lots of white collar fraud schemes are discovered by the person filling in for an absent perpetrator.

We're allowed to carry them over to next year with permission of your supervisor.

Check your "sick time" policy...I think most are only allowed for "employee too sick to come to work", although some companies allow them to be used for other reasons. At my company calling in sick to take your kid to the doctor is "sick time abuse" and subject to disciplinary action.

Re: Vacation Days

I've never used a sick day. I get four weeks of vacation and I use alot for the kids when sick. The school work for them is so demanding now you cant keep them from going. Never had a real vacation due to bills and making ends meet. Times have changed on the policy ( for men )and now I'm gonna reverse my policy.

OK, and we'll GET NOTHING done.

Europeans are suffering from "inexcellence".

-Mercedes-Benz (Daimler) is suffering from not being able to get anything done and they are suffering from their loss, as a so called "world leader", in quality and engineering excellence. They (MB/DCX) have lost the moniker as "quality leader". Look it up.

-Nissan-French owned. Leaves all of their engineering and marketing to the oriental side.

-Lexus (Toyota) wants NOTHING to do with with Europe, other than their money, for products sold.

-Saab, aircraft is defunct. GM is propping up car production-for now.

-Airbus, aircraft sales are down-quality issues. Boeing is making headway. Three cheers!

Just some examples.

Europe is going through a "negative" birth rate. It seems that european "policies" are against pro-creation and their labor laws are too restrictive for survival of many companies.

That's NOT where I want to be.

American's have been known as the most: ingenious, productive, and smartest employee base in the world. We're losing it, BIG TIME.

When I die, I'll know, I gave my all, for what I believed in. That philosophy has been VERY good to me. I do not accept "mediocrity".

Re: Vacation Days

Yah, that’s just what every dieing man mutters, "Damn I whish I’d dedicated more time to my job and less to my family and loved ones."
At my last employer, vacation was earned time off. You earn vacation time by working the required amount of time prior to using them. I was there long enough to EARN 5 week’s vacation. I choose to waste over 2 weeks a year due to my then misguided notion the company needed me. If the company you work for can not function without you, and you are not at the top of the pay scale you’re under compensated. BTW our company policy at the time was use it or loose it. In my last 5 years of employment with that company I forfeited over 7 weeks of vacation pay. As far as sick days, those were for employees that were more concerned with their own health than that of the company. BTW, this was all done by my own choosing.

Re: Vacation Days

Always use vacation days. they are earned and unlike other i have a life outside work. i would rather take a vacation day and do absolutly nothing but spend it with my wife and kids than go to work. but then again my family means alot more to me than any job. i dont use sick days unless i am really sick. i think in the 20 years i have with my present job i called in sick maybe 8 times.

When I didn't get paid for being off work sick I was always healthier. I now keep about a month to a month and a half of time on the books for that just in case time.

Re: Vacation Days

Vacation? Please explain this term.

I don't recall going a single day without doing some work in the last few years...even when I'm camping the cell phone's ringing.

Then again, my frequent business trips are kind of a vacation, since it's always to sunny Costa Mesa. :D

In high school I had a math teacher that had worked there for like 30 years. He never was absent and apparently teachers get to save their sick days forever. He said he had enough days saved up to take off 1.5 years with full pay, benefits, etc.

My company can, but not as well, function without me. I'm in the CUSTOMER SREVICE end. My customers buy from me because I am a top performer and a REAL customer service agent. My customers are # 1. Re: Vacation Days

I get 10 vacation days a year, and can carry over 10. They add at a rate of 1 per month except November and December or something like that adding to 10. I lose the year befores on my anniversary date. I never have ever used even close to all my days because we don't have anyone to cover my shift for extended periods. This year is the closest, I used 4 days.

Good news, after complaining about not being ABLE to take the days, they pay me off at the end of every year so I work to NOT take all my days. Only 2 of us get paid off.

Now to make it even harder to use all the days, the county looked into holidays. If any other county employee works on a holiday they get paid over time. We are not allowed any overtime ever, so we just get to work. A few years ago the board decided to give the deputies a paid day off to be taken by our choice sometime through the year for every holiday we work. The county recognizes 12 holidays a year so I get 12 more days off each year that I never use. They won't pay those off, they just add up. Right now I have over 25 days I could take off paid if someone could work my cases and my shift.

I am maxed out on sick days too. In the past 10 years I was sick one time enough to take a sick day. While I was home in bed crying about my tummy hurtin, I was called up for SWAT. Just had to do it! So as everyone else was searching and securing a residence, I was throwing up in the street. Shoulda stayed home, but can't pass the excitement and can't leave my partners hangin. I took 3 sick days each as Fraternity leave when my babies were born, so I have used 9 1/2 sick days in 10 years.

Guys like us are just too committed to those we work for.

DJ,
I could have worded that particular portion of my post better.

I elected to forfeit over 2 weeks of vacataion a year due to my notion that the company would suffer if I was not there to attend to any issues that could arise.
Also when I did take vacation I was required carry my company cell phone and check in daily. So I guess if you look at it my only real time off was weekends (if we weren’t working) and holidays. BTW I stand by the latter portion of that statment.

As for customer service, many a time have I been in a car, or on plane hours after receiving a call from a customer experiencing issues with our product. So I do understand customer service.
