Re: Vacation Days

I have 3 weeks vacation, 3 floating holidays(that varies between 2&3 floating hoildays each year)2 personal days and 3 sick days.Do I use them all.YES.Why? Because its a benefit, and if you dont use them, then its no benefit to you.I do not get any compensation for not using sick days, so all of those get used as well.Plus, if I come in sick and get someone else sick then we are really hosed. They would prefer that you did stay home and try to keep the rest of the work force healthy. If I was to work all year without a vacation I would go postal on someone. So if some little asian guy wants to come in and take my job just because I took a couple days off,Ill give him the keys to my full size work van, and a phone book to sit on so that he can see over the steering wheel.

Re: Vacation Days

DJ,
Where's the hostility coming from?
I haven't had a vacation (more than a long weekend) in over 10 years. I had two weeks paid each year for 5 years, and one week each for three years. The last time I called in sick the bosses chose to pay me because "If you call in sick you are SICK". We were not paid for holidays, and the only time off we had with pay been our vacation. I had two weeks; everyone else had one week. I worked there for three years, stayed late, came in weekends, came in early, etc, and called in sick once.
Studies show that workers are more productive who take vacations than those who don't. And if your employer weren't adversarial towards you, they would cash you out if you didn't use all of your vacation days. Some say it's to encourage you to use your vacation because, "Studies show that workers are more productive who take vacations than those who don't." Others refuse to cash you out because it's an easy way to cheat you out of your benefit. If you can't take your vacation time, then you are too valuable and therefore are under-compensated.
I am a business owner now, and as my business grows and requires employees I will certainly encourage my employees to take vacation, because it promotes better work and better employees.

Re: Vacation Days

I used to think just like you do DJ. I never missed a day and worked my tail off for the boss man come hell or high water. I was on the ground floor of the company and I thought I had it made. Ten years of total dedication. Then things got tight and guess what. Those of us that earned the most were first out the door at layoff time. Dont ever fool yourself that total dedication will always pay off. When it comes down to the nitty gritty, the company will sell you down the river in a heartbeat. It can happen to any of us. I learned the hard way.

At my present job I have 4 weeks vacation, 3 personal days, 13 paid holidays, and 12 sick days. I use a sick day now and again, our vacation accumulates over the course of the year and I normally have some time on the books. I use every personal day.

Life is to short. I use my time and enjoy myself. Not knocking anyone that is totally dedicated, if that is what makes you happy go for it.

Re: Vacation Days

I get 4 weeks vacation, so far. When I get to 12 years of working here, I will have a total of 9 weeks per year.
We have unlimited sick days, but none for personal time(as some have mentioned).
I do not abuse the system here at work.
I call in sick, when I am really really sick, or if I pull my back out, or if the arthritis acts up really bad.
I do not use all my vacation days each year, but my reasoning is different.
I want to take my dream vacation in a couple years. Sailing for 2 months...so I am carrying over some of vacation days, so it will all add up when I set sail.
Plus shortly, I will have my own business, so there will be no more vacation days for me, for a long time.
I think everyone should use all of their vacation days, enjoy your life, it is short and too much work is stressful.

Ouch! Yeah and also take your 250 hours of professional growth classes to keep your credential good to continue to teach. Then teach 6 weeks of summer school to supplement your pay to help you pay the bills since your annual salary doesn't. Not much vacation left after that. Yep, I'm a bit touchy about that subject! I'm a teacher!
Bassy

Re: Vacation Days

wow you guys have it easy. I take two weeks of vaca a year....no sick days , no personal days....if your hurt or sick you have to work anyways. For me..it would suck to be working for corperate america. The pluses for me are that i can take time off at anytime and do not have to call anybody. The fact that i love my job makes for a short work week.

Re: Vacation Days

I get 20 paid vacation days,5 floating holidays,2 personal days and sixty days for sick leave yearly.I can only carry over 7 vacation days. The sick days can be used when needed. I use maybe 2 or 3 each year.It is a very good feeling to know that I can break a leg and be down for up to 12 weeks and yet get paid my full salary. There is no compensation for unused vacation or left over sick days.

I burn 'em up, no sense spending time at work when I have a family at home.

Re: Vacation Days

I use all my vacation (4 weeks) and personal time (5 days). Sick time is unlimited unless you abuse it.

And that's the way it's going to be until I retire.
