I'm working on a mid '60's evinrude, and there is this vacuum diaphram thingy on the side of the motor. There's about 4 wires and on vacuum hose that goes to it. The vacuum hose runs to the intake and two of the wires, run up under the flywheel, I'm assuming to the coils.

Does anybody know what this vacuum diaphram thingy does or what it's there for? I'm guessing something to kill the motor?

Thanks

Can you give us a model number, or at least a HP, Shaffer?

Hi Shaffer
The vacuume thingy in question is a rev limiter. These motors can have a tendency to run away under certian conditions. The vacuume switch grounds out one set of points when crankcase vacuume reaches dangerous levels.

Sorry about that. It's a 40hp.

A rev limiter would make sense, because it's also wired into the little switch that contacts the stator plate.

Thanks,
Chris
