Would anyone have a ballpark idea of the value of a Johnson RDSL-25D in good to very good condition?
It's a 40 HP, I believe 1963 model.
A friend in Arizona inherited one. Thanks much for any ideas.

Not enough to retire on!

Few hundred bucks in good running condition in my area.

In unknown running condition, not much. Maybe a couple hundred, tops, if it comes with controls. I paid $60 for a 1959 RD this summer, basically to keep it from going to scrap pile.

+1. In my area (FL) a good running version might be worth a few hundred bucks, a little more with the controls. Condition is the key and your motor has been painted green and has dubious "whale tale" attachment, which may take the price down a bit. The good news is that they're very reliable and easy tor work on, so you could fix it up for yourself and have fun with it.

Yea, those are pretty common in my area and don't bring in a lot of cash, but like others have said here, they are very reliable and easy to work on. My best deal, was three of them, for $50 and I got two of them running, before I spent a dime. I have a '59 model that I'm restoring now, that I got from my neighbor for $40. So, if you have it running nice with controls, that would be the best way to get it sold. Better yet, pick up a cheap boat to put it on and sell a complete package.

$40, $50!!!!! I gotta get up to Yamhill (where ever that is) :) A decent running 30-40 something hp like that would go for about $300-$400 down here, but a decent 9.9, 15-25hp for quite a bit more. It seems a lot of it has to do with what folks are looking for. I noticed the OP is from Cali too, and for some reason everything costs more out there so it may fetch a higher price. Painting the cowl white again and removing ye ol' whale tail might help too.
