Greetings,

I'm looking at buying a spare motor for my newly acquired Boston Whaler Montauk. The motor I found is a '89 Yamaha 90HP motor that was only run in Freshwater. It appears to run very well and has no corrosion. The compression is also good with very little variation between cylinders.
I was wondering if you guys had any opinions as to the value of this motor. I believe I can get it for $1300 with Controls and Prop.

Your expert opinions are very well appreciated.

Thank you,

John :)

Hi, John. That yammy is a good match to the Montauk if you are going to go 2 stroke. Now; value: Sometimes being an "expert" is just a matter of knowing who to ask.

Try

www2.nadaguides.com

(I think that's it.)

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

1300 is about what's worth. If it's good deal or not depends on what kind of shape it's in. Being a fresh water engine is a great start with an older Yam like that. Make sure the shift rod that runs from the gearcase to the base of the powerhead is not rusted. Yam was using steel back then and not stainless. Yam had all kinds of corrosion issues back then with their engines in saltwater. Not that they would corrode apart, it was mostly trying to get them apart to work on them.

I have this motor on my 1500 Sprint and it runs great. Now I just started having an issue where the buzzer goes off if I run hard for a period, I have an old tach that does not have the warning lights working so I'm not sure whats causing it. The buzzer comes on and then it goes away when I slow down.

Probably the overheat alarm. Those narrow 3 cyls had an issue if they did not get flushed and were run in salt water. When run at high rpm or under a load they will overheat. It means pulling the head and blasting the block to remove the built up residue....
