Valves and Timing?

I have a new 2010 30 hp. Is it really necessary to adjust the valve and timing every 100 hours? Seem like over kill. You don't on a car engine.

Thanks
Don

Not neccessary at all. Just run it till it breaks, then complain about it.

Don, A lot of auto engines, especially american ones have hydraulic valve lifters. These never need adjustment. Some auto engines have solid lifters. These need to be adjusted periodically.

Every 100 hours seems like a lot of maintenance, however, thay may be every 2 years or so, on a boat engine.

They are like a solid lifter and must be adjusted per manufactuer instructions or run it till it breaks, then complain about it.

Boy you guy's sound like a broken record!
I called the Mercury boat dealer by my house and they said
no you don't have to adjust them every 100 hours.
Chris1956 thanks for the straight answer.

So where did you read or hear that you DID need to adjust them every 100 hours? If it came from the engine owners manual or the service manual, then yes -- you need to CHECK and then IF NECESSARY, ADJUST the valves. This process is not an always adjust situation. If you check them and they are within spec you obviously don't need to adjust them. If the manuals say to do it and you don't feel it is necessary, then I agree with the "run it 'til it breaks and then complain" crowd.

That dealer wants it to BREAK, so he can CHARGE you for him to fix it, cause the warranty will NOT cover your failure to perform required maintenance.

Re: Valves and Timing?

The first few hundred hours an ANY new engine with valves are the most critical, as the valves/seats 'hammer in', wearing away material on both the valve and seat, allowing the valve to further 'seat' slightly deeper than original, closing up the valve lifter clearance to the cam.

Not a problem with hydraulic lifters, a SERIOUS problem with solid lifters and overhead cams.

Failure to perform REGULAR REQUIRED maintenance is grounds for canceling factory warranty.
