I have a wood deck hatch on my boat. I find myself
refinishing it every 12 to 18 months. What would be
the best finish to last the longest? Vanish, PolyU,
clear fiberglass or is there something better? Would
like to keep the wood look. I think it should last
longer than 12-18 months.

Smitty

Have you considered teak? You would need to oil it up once in a while, but stays looking great for years if you regularly oil the wood. Oiling is certainly easier than a complete refinish. I have teak swim platforms on my boat, and I have to oil them about once or twice every two months. Totally worth the ten minutes it takes. If your current hatch is made of teak just sand it down really good and oil the heck out of it.

Get a good quality spar varnish and put on 4-5 coats. Most of the other stuff will yellow with the UV rays of the sun.

How long should the spar varnish last?
