The fuel gauge on my 95 Formula keeps hanging. I start it up and bang on the gauge for a bit to see if it moves one way or another. I've never run out of fuell just appears the gauge is hanging inside. It currently mounts from the back and the hole is less than 2 inch, so if I'm having trouble finding a replacement. I think the gauges are vangaurd series from some research but on the side it says VDO YAZAKI.

Wouldn't mind changing out the hole setup and install another GPS map and not use the water tube speedo. Any ideas?

Re: VDO Vanguard Gages

I think that my boat has the 'Blue Line' series of VDO gauges, but yours may have the Vanguards. The hole should be around 2-1/16" +/- (52 mm). If you have checked all the connections and have ruled out the sender, then you could buy a new gauge. If you are going to go electronic with the gauges, you can buy some 'blanks' from VDO to fill in the holes.

I have downloaded several VDO catalogs over the past few years, but I am not sure which product lines they still make. As I recall, their latest catalog showed only the "Ocean Line" of gauges in their marine line-up.

I wish it was standard but the pics attached show the opening and the gauge is smaller than 2 inches. Bought a Teleflex gauge 2 years ago and got around to trying to install it yesterday just to stop banging on the gauge. If I could find somthing that to cleanly bore the hole bigger I might give it a go. Still want to remove the speedo and use that area for a chart plotter. Don't need a water tube speedo with using a GPS.

Buy a rotary rasp and chuck it in yoru drill. Cheap and easy to hog out the hole as needed.

Re: VDO Vanguard Gages

Glue a "Plug" wth an accurate center hole into the panel hole.

Then use a Hole Saw with a center guide bit to open the hole up.

Go Slowly. ;)

Hadn't thought of that, not bad. I could start by running the hole saw in reverse to scratch away the paint and get down to metal, then go forward and finish the hole. The plate is aluminum and could make it though most the way before I went forward.
