Velvet Drive Overheating

I have a 10-18-000-006 transmission I rebuilt. It previously had blown a reduction unit and had been rebuilt by someone else.

They installed a early production style reduction unit on the current production style transmission assembly.

The transmission was overheating and putting the engine into RPM reduction mode. I rebuilt it replacing clutch packs, seals and replaced the pump as well as the FWD/REV adapter plate that were both severely damaged when the reduction gear blew and were not replaced.

The transmission still overheats and it seems the heat is being generated in the reduction unit. When I rebuilt it all components of the reduction unit appeared okay.

All lines and cooler have been flushed and a new raw water pump installed. Coolant temperature drops about 50 deg. F returning from cooler.

I am not sure which reduction unit adapter is installed early or current production.

The reduction unit housing also has a fitting for an oil line to be attached with nothing hooked to it. Most of the housings I have seen do not have this fitting.

If the wrong adapter is installed could this cause overheating?
With this style reduction case (with fitting) does a oil line need to be attached here?
Is there something I am overlooking?

Hey Dave. welcome aboard!!! I have moved this over to the Inboard engine section as it will probably attract the most experience over here. Good luck with this thing. I have a Velvet drive rebuild in my near future so I may need to lean on you. Any special tools required? I have the manual etc., this is a simple direct drive unit. Sorry for the mini hijack :redface: :)
