Ventless Gas stove to propane?

Hello all.. I was recently gifted a ventless Natural Gas stove with the fake logs in it..Nice little unit. I don't use natural gas though.. I have all propane hookups. It is a Winrich Perfecta 40,000 btu model, and the company seems to have gone away sometime in the late 90's. None of the local places want to touch it because it's not a brand they are familiar with. Any experts know if it's as simple as changing a nozzle or Oriface for the conversion? ..Oh..And this will not be for indoor use. It will be plumbed up to heat a garage on weekends. Hopefully...Thanks in advance..

You MAY be able to convert it, if it has an interchangeable orifice. You will need to change both the orifice and the pressure regulator. I once found a web site that outlined the specific parameters for changing over from one to the other but could not locate it in a quick google search.

That sounds like an interesting way to throw some heat in the garage. I've been using a kerosene heater for the last couple of years, takes the edge off when working out there

Ventilation isn't an issue.. Actually it's in the neighbors large portable garage. My genius idea was to try and get the correct size burner holes or kit, and to run it from a portable tank. I have a propane hose and regulator already..Just need to figure out how to get the orifice size correct. RHB.. How much larger did you have to make the holes in your stove? Please keep in mind that this would not ever be left unattended before i get the safety first speech..;)

Here's some info that may help. NOTE: it is stated in the article "natural gas orifices are larger than propane orifices strictly because of gas service pressure" Therefor going from Natural gas to Propane you will need to reduce the orifice size not increase it.

Well, I just E-mailed him to see exactly what he did (he is the gas guy in the family), all I know is the thing works great now, before the flames were, lazy????

Re: Ventless Gas stove to propane?

Starting to make some sense now..The hose and regulator i have now actually has an adjustment valve on it to limit the amount of propane supplied to the burner. I wonder if i could hook it up the way it is, and limit the supply of propane to the stove with the "Valve" that is built into the hose...Hmnnn. I believe i will give this a try tonight and post results. There would be no way for the flame to reach the tank, and having the front plate off while doing this should amount to no more than an abnormal flame if it doesn't like the flow of propane..It would not be able to build up with the cover off to combust.

I use a ventless gas furnace from Home Depot to heat my garage/workshop. It does a great job unless it's 20 below zero. Then it can't keep it warm. I have to wear a jacket.
I just looked at their web site HD and Lowe's both and they don't carry them now. Maybe a seasonal thing? I also checked harbor Freight as they had them at Christmas time and they don't have them now. So it must be a seasonal thing. I'll check Ebay .
BINGO http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_tr...ventless+gas+heater&_sacat=See-All-Categories
I have the 20k I'm heating about 7,000 sq ft or half my garage and it's insulated. If I had it to do over again. I would buy the 30k

Re: Ventless Gas stove to propane?

So, as far as what he did to my stove?????
But this is what he E-mailed me back

The orifice needs to be about a 1/4 smaller for propane as the calorific value is 2,500 Btu/hr and Natural Gas is 1,050 Btu/hr

The gas regulator also needs to have its spring changed or be changed out as most propane appliances run at 11" of WC and most natural gas at 3.5"
