Just posted. A respected member of BITOG analyzed the 12 filter medias for smallest and average pore size and tested flow with 30W oil.
I have added these to the original document and added a rating system.

Also added were the PureOne and ST filters.

Let the discussions begin! I found it very interesting and enlightening. And I thought that if a media looked similar and was from the same manufacturer it was the same!

There are about 60 hours and $70 in this testing and documentation -- Enjoy!

Link to filter study

It's amazing how different a filter can be. So, from what i gather Merc thinks it's better to have flow over filtration?

Yes, I believe that Merc is primarily interested in flow.

Initially, before the pore and flow tests were run I had made up my mind to use the Baldwin or AC filters in my boat.

That is because all the media looked the same and the Baldwin and AC had a lot of media.

Now considering the pore and flow I will now use the K&N b/c it has +20% better filtering and just as good of flow. It also gives you 10% more oil in your system, which I think is a positive.

You get all of that for your additional $3 over the Merc.

As for cars, this study helps me decide on Baldwin, WIX, PureOne or AC. Decent flow and very good filtering.
