This lower unit is actually on an 07 opti..anyway my buddy left the lower unit up and it froze and broke the carrier...no biggie...pulled it apart cleaned it up good and replaced the carrier....so he comes back in with it and you can move the shaft up and down...just slightly...and in and out as well...so I think I didnt get the carrier in all the way...so I pull it all apart again clean it up and put it all back together again...this time I built a spanner nut wrench and really cranked down on it...to the point Im afraid of ruining the threads in the housing...and still moving...just slightly...both in and out and up and down.....there were only two shims behind the rear shaft bearing...which is what the book shows...but Im thinking that the rear bearing just isnt seated all the way against the race....I am thinking add another shim?...speak to me gurus!...thanks

I ordered a shim kit...I would think the play would equal the shim there abouts...I did need to know that on the torque, thank you very much...I believe Im well above that. I have rebuilt and repaired several lower units and never had an issue before this one....been lucky I suppose.
