Want to check the engine temp this weekend using an IR thermometer. I want to make sure the temp gage is correct. I figure I'll check the temp at the t-stat housing. Is this correct or should I be checking at some other point on the engine?

Tommays is on the money.
But they are a good tool for checking and comparing temps but like he says different surfaces may give you some variations.
The closer you can get to your target the better the results may be.

Good luck,

Peter
