Vertical shaft help.

Hey folks.
Just found the holy grail a few months ago for me. It's a Volvo Penta 250 A drive. (A= 1.31 to 1). Took it out for the first time today and for the couple minutes I got to use it, it was just what the doctor ordered for my boat's woes. Then this happened,

Snapped the top couple inches of the vertical shaft clean off. No grinding, no noise just going along and it was like the prop fell off or something.
I've had a couple Volvo's apart but never took the vertical shaft out before but they all, 270, 280, etc look alike (not that looks means anything). So i've done some quick research and the only numbers I can come up with for any Penta drive for the vertical shaft is,
Countershaft 832555 Replaced by: Countershaft kit 854612
Is there only one vertical shaft for all Volvo Penta's?

Apparently it looks like the vertical shaft is the same on many Volvo outdrives, but I have never taken a shaft out of e.g. a 250 drive and installed it in a 290 or visa versa, so I can't say for sure.
