Well how exactly are you supposed to know? ESP? Lick the battery terminals? :D

It should have a 9 amp charging system. Charging systems were standard on all the electric shift outboards. ;)

Re: Very Dumb Me

There is a relatively easy check for this. Check the starter solenoid. The terminal on which the red (positive) battery cable is connected will have a smaller wire connected to that terminal if the engine has an alternator. If not -- it doesn't. Check number two would be to measure battery voltage with the engine off. Start the engine and rev it to about 2000 rpm. If battery voltage rises above 12.6 (actually 13.5 or more) you obviously have a working alternator. It is certainly possible however to make that check and even though there is an alternator, it may not be working.

This is really important...

That motor has amplified points ignition. The amps are very expensive to replace. It will fail if your battery connections are loose or corroded. The rectifier for your charging system can fail as well. Keep the battery connections clean and tight. At the very least, use a pliers on those wingnuts. When I rig such a motor, I throw the wingnuts in the glovebox and replace them with stainless locknuts. That way customers have to use a wrench and they will make them tight. Finger-tight wingnuts can easily cost you a $300 amp.
