last year i purchase a 1995 quest 170 cc for little to nothing. the magictilt aluminumn trailer is worth more than i paid for the set. i knew the floor was soft, but i liked the boat and so bought it and used it quite a bit since april 2012. then, a couple of months ago i decided it was time to do a little bit of work to it, and this is how it turned out. motor is getting worked on at present, so i haven't taken it out since finishing it, but should be able to next weekend. looking forward to it. take a look. never done this type of stuff before, so please go easy on me!! lol

Re: very first time

brown seats came with the purchase. motor in the shop as we speak, so kinda gotta use what i have for now. hopefully will be upgrading the seats as funding becomes available. lol by the way, when i get out to the fishing areas, just pull the drivers seat and put it on the front casting deck. makes for good room in the back area.

Re: very first time

Is the deck coating Paint or Gelcoat? If Paint, what kind? What kind of resin and glass did you use? What's the time frame of this effort?

Re: very first time

it is gelcoat, and if i had to do it again, i could do it much better. took a gallon and a half to get it where it is, but prolly needs to be sprayed on thicker than what i rolled it. even with the mil guage i got from the boat store, i couldn't keep it perfect. and this stuff gells up purty fast!!!! here is a list of things from the store. i know it says 5 gals of boatyard resin, but it took 7.5 gallons. both sides of the wood were treated.
like i said, this was the first time i have ever attempted this, so all in all, i think it was pretty good.

1. 5 gal. Boatyard resin------------------------------$99.21------------------part no. 128746

2. 1 gal. catalyst MEKP clear or red------------------$39.27------------------part no. 123984

3. 12" wide roll 1815 stitch mat----------------------------------------------part no. 125687------$5.42 per linear yard

4. 50" wide 1815 stitch mat---------------------------------------------------part no. 125691------$10.24 per linear yard

Re: very first time

7.5gal of resin seems short if all the structure you put below decks got wrapped, and very short if any of the original structure was replaced.

Hard to tell from the pix, but it looks like some original structure was left in place, and some new added structure may not have been wrapped:

Did you core the transom?

Core any of the below deck structure?

Re: very first time

you are correct. the underside was only resin coated, topside was glassed. and it was an overlay on most of the old structure. just wanted to get a couple more years out of it until i can get a new one. i am sure it wasn't a professional grade job, or even a "correctly" done one, but for my first go round, and with limited funds, i will take it. time to get back on the water!! lol

Re: very first time

Well, If it's only intended for 2 years and then headed for the scrap heap then It'll probably suffice. Poly resin without glass is mostly useless. If it flexes it will crack. If it cracks it will allow water to penetrate the wood. If you keep the boat covered and cared for, You should get at least 2 years out of her if the transom is good.
