Greetings everyone. Fairly new to the board and having an issue with my boat. Here what a I have:

1999 Chaparral 2135 cuddy, Volvo Penta 5.0 Gi, Cobra SX-M outdrive. I replaced the gimbal bearing, ujoints and bellows, and corrected the alignment. It now vibrates and growls severely when turning either direction, and somewhat in a a straight line. When I R&R'd the ujoints, I neglected to mark the shafts and ujoint cage. I figured that such a short shaft is not balanced....but now I'm not so sure. Does any one know if this is a balanced unit? Anyone had a similar problem and flipped the center cage over and corrected it? Thanksi n advance for any advice.

Re: Vibration after gimbal bearing and ujoint replacement

I had this kind of problem on a car and it turned out that whilst rebuilding the "U" joint one of the needle rollers had been dislodged and was sitting in the end of the "U" joint cap. I had to pull it and rebuild it with a bit more care! I did not think there was enough room for the cap to fit with a roller out of place, but the circlips went back in place without a struggle. Sold the car with 50,000 miles on the "U" joints and no further problems.
