New to the forum and need help. I have a 2004 Regal with a 5.0 MPI Alpha Gen 2 I beleive. It vibrated some last year but I did not know it was a problem since all I have owned is outboards. Last weekend it got worst as the weekend progressed.
Really showed up in the turns while trying to throw the kid off the tube. Gimbal bearing? Universal joint? What else should I check. Thanks in advance for the help...

Re: Vibration

I would suspect with it getting worse in turns that it is a U-joint, but the gimbal may have a factor in there to.

One of the experts will chime in to clarify I am sure.

Cheers

Thats what I think also. Should I run a little bit after greasing?

Re: Vibration

I would pull the drive and physically check the u-joint for play. If there is any play in the joint itself it needs to be rebuilt.

If I remember correctly, you can't grease the u-joint on that drive. The external grease fitting is for the gimbal bearing.

Re: Vibration

No way to check the universal joints without pulling the drive? Can I pull the bellows back and check them? Bad thing is I wish I had brought it home from the lake( 2 hours away)last weekend...

Re: Vibration

Whole process takes less than an hour. Pull drive (Control box in F) six nuts off pull drive. Inspect/grease U-Joints. New gasket set, Back on. Have gasket set on hand before you start. Grease U-joints and gimbal bearing.

Re: Vibration

That rig will never turn as vibration free as an outboard boat would. I had a similar problem, and didn't realize I had a u joint wear issue until I replaced them. The trunions can get grooved, without any noticable play, while twisting by hand.
