Is it possible to load DVDs onto my hard drive so I can watch movies on the plane? I don’t want to copy to the DVDs, just want to watch them from my computer without having to use the DVD drive. Seems it would save batt pwr by not having to run the DVD drive, and I wouldn’t have to tote around the DVD.

I have InterVideo WinDVD and WinDVD Creator for apps, or do I just copy files from the DVD to my hard drive?!? I know people copy DVDs, but like I said, I don’t want to copy the DVD to another DVD, just load it to the computer for viewing later. Possible?

You need to use a program that "rips" the dvd to your hard drive. Go search for a program called dvd decrypter, it will rip them to your hard drive. I don't know if windvd will allow you to play from dvd files instead of a disc though.

Sure, make a folder on your HD. Copy the DVD files (usually the VOB files etc) into that folder. Launch WinDVD. Look for a menu selection in WinDVD to load media files from you HD. Steer the program to your movie folder and pick the first VOB file, hit play.

I havn't used Windvd in awhile, so I'm not sure if loading files from the HD is a menu selection. PowerDVD does have this function.
You realize that you're going to need at least 4+ gigs of free space on your HD per DVD movie....

Edit: Duuh, a little thing like CSS shouldn't stop most folks, but I forgot to mention the ripping part...

"rips" is commonly used.... however the terminology that Nero uses is Burn an "Image", NOT a copy.

An image will have any secret files necessary for the file to play, whereas a copy will only copy the file.

Anything is posible, but first you need to decrypt the movie.
You can search the internet and download it for free. WARNING: COPYING MOVIES WITHOUT WRITTEN AUTHORIZATION IS ILLEGAL SUBJECT TO FINE AND IMPRISONMENT . You may need a third party device to glue the files back together. Most cases you don't.

I have a Mac system: a decrypter and Final Cut Pro HD. If you have similiar system, I can send you a copy.

do I just copy files from the DVD to my hard drive?!?
Correct!

Open the DVD copy the Video TS folder paste the folder to your hardrive.
Generaly no decrypting is necessary some of the newer releases don't like to be backed up but most will play.

Re: Viewing DVDs from HD

Thanks for all of the responses. I'm starting with the easiest method, a copy/paste of the DVD to the HD.

Can’t copy/paste the Video TS folder, I get a file system error. Tried to copy the individual files but some file types cause the file sys error msg. That’s on the laptop running WinXP. Tried copying the folder on the comp running Win98 and no problems, seems to be copying the whole video_ts folder. Ain’t fast, 1883584 minutes remaining. That’s 3.6 years. Thinking the little 19gb disk with 9gb free space is gonna be in trouble soon.
:D

Don’t know if it matters but when I “explore” the contents of the DVD with WinXP, the fold is called VIDEO_TS, and on win98 it is called Video_TS. Thinking maybe diff copy routines, maybe the newer WinXP stuff looks for copyrighted file types and won’t allow copying?!?

Back to the laptop/WinXP … WinDVD Creator will let me “import” media but the Video TS folder is not media. Would I need to import each individual file in the video_ts folder? I don’t see anything in Windows Media Player that allows the video to be imported/ripped, only audio files.

Hey Vipzach, your in Choctaw! Family from my dad’s side crept off the Choctaw reservation. My dad was born somewhere in Grady Co, I think Farwell, Ok. Never been there.

Here’s an email address for that decrypter:

Thanks Tommays. I’m going to try the Vipzach special to rip it. Can’t figure out how to rip it with WinDVD or WinDVD Creator, or Win Media Player. Haven’t looked at the B&O Beoplayer yet, got it loaded, too. It’s supposed to be a multimedia ripper/player, haven’t played with it too much. It’s by far the sleekest looking player I’ve seen.

Fwiw, Win98 didn't like the idea of deleting an 8gb folder, it choked. No prob deleting the folder contents in groups of files.

Yes, I have been using it. It is really slick, it was super easy to setup and works well. I showed it to a couple of guys here at work and one of them uses it all the time too. Thanks for the cool program!

Use dvd decrypter to create an iso image of the disc and then use dameon tool (a virtual disc drive) to play the iso. It will be a big file (4-8 gig) so have a big hard drive. You can shrink it down but that will require more steps, check out afterdawn.com as they have lots of good tutorials on many of these dvd/video subjects.
