I have made so many posts lately it's hard to keep up, but the weather here is so hot I'm doing everything but boating! Don't think it's for the post count, because I lost my password and as soon as this computer dies, I'll lose this account :(

I purchased my boat 2 years ago, never got the trailer in my name. In AZ there is not penalty for waiting :)

The problem is: when I took the trailer to the DMV, they couldn't find the VIN number, so they wanted me to post a bond (several thousand dollars) and issue me a VIN. The title has one. The tongue appears to be homemade and has been welded on since the trailer was new. I'm guessing the original VIN was removed with the old tongue.

I need to have a vin plate made up OR stamp the numbers into the "C" channel.

Any thoughts on what is best and how to go about it, I need to get this trailer in my name. Thanks.

Re: VIN Plate

Just get some cheap metal stamps and pound them into the frame. I bet Harbor Freight sells 'em cheap...

Think I need to heat it, or just pound 'em?

Re: VIN Plate

Should be able to pound them in, with a big hammer and a steady hand. Better yet, hold the stamp with a vicegrips.

Or stamp the id into a piece of aluminum, and then attach it to the trailer.

Or get an engraving tool and etch them right in.

Ordered a 34 punch set off of ebay (no harbor freight within 2 hours).

Will give 'er a try when it comes.

Does it typically take one powerful blow from a ball peen hammer, or several hits?

Re: VIN Plate

Can't you register the trailer as home made?

One blow with a BFHammer.
Watch your fingers.

You should be able to email the iboats board operators and ask for you to send your password. It will be sent to the email address you used when you registered.

I am surprised the person who stole it the first time didn't think of that! :D

I emailed about a month ago... no response. I included my problem in that email -> we moved and the ISP email address I was using is not longer accessible, so I provided my internet email, but no go apparently. :( :( :(
