The link that was created to read up on fiberglass use recommends useing vinegar for clean up of reisn I disagree it takes twice as long to do the job everytime I went to clean up after each coat with vinegar It made me run in the house and make a salad to munch on the by the time I finished my salad my resin was hard and had to be sanded. The Italian in me just can't resist so be advised. By the way the vinegar did cleanup the poly very good.

IIRC, vinegar cleans epoxy, not poly. Acetone keeps my poly tools clean.

Alcohol will reduce uncured epoxy. Its what I use to clean tools when working with epoxy. Best bet is a coffee can full of alcohol and just let the parts soak while you work.

I have been using acetone to clean uncured epoxy from my tools and it seems to work well enough. Does vinegar or alcohol work better and is that denatured alcohol?

I always use acetone to clean my tools when using either resin except for chip brushes and I throw those away after each use. I've heard about the vinegar and tried it when I got some resin on my skin and it didn't work so well, poly or epoxy. It did make me smell like a pickle afterwards though.

I do believe the alcohol is denatured (think it has to be by law). I buy both Alcohol and Acetone at Walmart or Home Depot, they have the lowest prices around.

Alcohol does not work quite as well as Acetone for cleaning, but it also does not evaporate as fast. The slower evaporation is why I like to use it to keep the disposable brushes soft while working. On a hot day, two or three cups of Acetone will evaporate in half an hour. Its also heavier than air, so vapors will collect in low places like the bilge of the boat which is a big fire hazard. Alcohol vapor is lighter than air and will not "puddle" in the boat, which is a nice safety feature.

For cleanup of tools when done for the day, its hard to beat acetone.

So they both have their pros and cons. I need to have both on hand.

I have been using NAPA adhesive remover to clean my hands of the uncured fiberglass resin. It seems to work ok but it makes my wife whine at me cause it stinks. But then she always needs something to whine about anyhow.

Re: Vinegar cleanup no good

Accually I started this thread to be a little funny after discovering that my transom was rotted out and went through all the nasty demo and repaired it with messey resin and fiberglass I thought a little humor was in order to keep my sanity but everyone took it serios but thats great I learned alot from this site I couldn't of even started this project without this forum. But on a serios note the poly resin I am useing cleans off my hand with Go Jo hand cleaner and tools clean up with acetone easily I just use disposable brushes and rollers. Thanks all for the help John
