Fella gave me this motor as payment for a carb rebuild on a Merc. I suspect it's a frankenmotor... lower unit is brown like a Ducktwin and the top is silver/blueish-green like a lightwin. It needs some parts but I can't put a positive id on it. I suspect mid-fifties 3 horse. Tag reads as follows: 4425- 00599C

Can someone put a year and hp rating on this thing for me? Thanks!

Yup a '48 Sportsman 1.5 hp. Nice little motors. It takes a Champion J6J or J6C plug, gapped at .030, with point gap of .020. Recommended fuel mix back in the day was 1/3 pint of oil per gallon of gas. Post a pix if you can.

24:1 is a safe mix using TC-W3 oil. That is 1 quart per 6 gallons, or 1/3 pint per gallon.

Re: Vintage Evinrude id?

I got it started last weekend & ran it for about 5 minutes in the bucket! Purred like a kitten! Rebuilt the carb and cleaned up the electrical gizmos and reset the points, new plug blah, blah, blah.

Thanks again for the help guys!

...now if I can just find a lower shroud...:D
