I finishing the installation of the new stringers today and move on to install the flooring this week end. I've purchased some NAUTOLEX vinyl for the floor and I'm wondering what to use for the adhesive on my new epoxy coated floor. Also, I'm planning on installing marine grade vinyl on the sides to dress it up. Is there a bulk adhesive I can spray on using a brinks style spraygun?

Re: VINYL FLOORING

Home depot sells a water proof rubber adhesive made for vinyl it works good. I used it when I put my NAUTOLEX floor in. After I lay the flooring down, I rented one of those linolium rollers to make sure the air bubbles were out, and the vinyl laid flat. Are you going to be putting foam rubber behind the vinyl for the sides? I think thats the best way, and then use stainless staples to staple the vinyl to the back board. After I did all that, I got that rubber adhiesive and coated the under side of the vinyl with the staples in it to keep water out, and coated the staple heads, and the whole ply back board.

Re: VINYL FLOORING

Does the rubber adhesive roll on or do you spray it on? My project boat just had carpet glued directly to the inside surfaces. I was thinking of just sanding down the mess that left behind and gluing some vinyl (similar to seat vinyl, although I haven't bought this yet) in it's place. My thinking was it would look better and not retain water like carpet. I REALLY wouldn't want to do this again....i think...

Check this site out. This is what I put on my deck. its one piece (no seams for water to get in) the water just rolls off. and its anti-slip Great flooring! If you use regular seat vinyl on the floor, I hope you have very good accident insurance, cause you or someone else will slip on if if wet, and fall on your a$$ or worse, out of the boat.
And no, its not a spray, you apply it with a brush. by the way the adhiesive thats on this site is the same as home depot, only 1/2 the price.

http://www.garysupholstery.com/ntomarfloor.html

Re: VINYL FLOORING

I guess I wasn't clear...I'm using a textured Nautolex vinyl that will cover the entire floor in one piece and was thinking of using the seat vinyl to apply to the side walls of the hull to make them look more finnished. I read in one of the posts of someone that found some white roll on truck bed liner that might be an options also if I knew where to find some...

I understand now, sorry, The carpet is on the inside hull gotya. I have that too. I thought you were wanting to make new upholstered side walls in front of the carpeted hull. I dont know if you can use this adheisive in a sprayer. I know it works good, and I think a 6" brush, or roller woulg spread it quick. They make an adheisive in a spray can.

Re: VINYL FLOORING

I am having problems with the adhesive that Nautolex insists must be used. My floor came out terrible. I only did the gas tank cover, I have to figure out what to do wiht the rest.

Re: VINYL FLOORING

Do you recal the brand name of the rubber adhesive you got at Home depot? How much did it cost and do you think the same adhesive would work for the sides and the seat type vinyl I'm considering? It would appear that the nautolox adhesive leaves something to be desired. Did you use the nautolox adhesive over poly or epoxy? Do I need to rough up the surface before applying the adhesive?

Re: VINYL FLOORING

dbergman, go to your local auto upholsterer with a clean, dry gallon jug. Maybe like you buy windshield washer fluid in, or gallon jugs of applejuice. They should have bulk contact cement that they should sell you a gallon of for 15 to 20$. It will spray, undiluted, in your binks style gun.

Pre-fit, pre-position and fan-fold your flooring (about 24" sections)spray the back of the flooring section, then the equivelant section of floor, let it tack up a bit then start unfolding the sprayed vinyl, pressing down from the center out, onto the sprayed floor. Repeat for each folded section. It is super easy and super neat. I taped newspaper every where and never needed it.

If you have any seams or exposed edges, which I did not have,(my edges were left free floating and tucked up under the side panels) you really want to get some kind of super (maybe two part) glue to do those. Otherwise the edges will end up curling, later, on you. I think you could use the same kind of glue that they use for the seams and unsecured edges on residential vinyl flooring.

To clean the gun, pour the excess back into the bottle and then pour in medium reducer, slosh it around, spray it then pour it out and do it again. Lacquer thinner just makes the glue ball up in the bottom of the sprayer, then when you try to pour it all out the ball of goo readheres to the cup.

Re: VINYL FLOORING

Thanks alot...
1) Does it take a flooring roller to lay the flooring down using this method?
2) Do you apply the contact cement to bothe the back side of the vinyl and the floor, or is it sufficient to apply it to just the floor and then roll out the flooring?
3) If I was to paint the inner side of the hull on the sides (with maybe bed liner) and build some panels to go from the floor to the cap, could I use 1/4" hardboard covered with upholstery vinyl glued to it? I'm not sure how sturdy the panel would need to be.
4) Where do I find medium reducer....I'm not familiar with it...

I would not have ever started this project without this forum to research. Thanks to all of you for your help. Here is a picture of my side with my new stringers going in...

Re: VINYL FLOORING

No roller dbergman, spray both the vinyl and the floor and let it tack up. Re-read my post, it gives good instruction. It would help to have someone hold up your folded vinyl straight up in the air while you begin to push each 24" glued section down onto the floor from the center, then work your hands to the outside edges. Your helper would be lowering the vinyl as you call for it so you can control the contact and eliminate any bubbles in the vinyl. Remember that it is contact cement so have your material lined up b4 you begin to unfold and press it down.

Get the medium reducer at any auto paint store,

Your other questions I have no opinion on as I am packing for a trip to California.

Looks like you are a ways from laying flooring yet. Be sure to clean the blush of the epoxy floor coating off with acetone b4 you begin to glue.

If you look at my picture you will see that the sides pockets are also covered in Nautolex. It is the original material which I will eventually pull off and replace with the new stuff that is on my floor. Just fit and precut the side pieces and glue them in the same way.
