Hi Guys

Looking for some help to get me started in the right direction.

I have a 24ft Fairline Holiday, planing hull, AQ200d petrol engine with a AQ 280 outdrive. I want to replace the petrol engine with a diesel engine.

My questions are, could you recommend an engine to replace the petrol one ? does the engine come with all the wiring looms ? do I have to get new gauges and gauge panel ? do I need to change my fuel tank ? and would I have to change the fuel lines ?

I am in the UK so does anyone know any places to recommend for engines. (probably second hand depending on the price or new of price is right).

Sorry for all the questions but I would like to know the roughly what I am looking for. The engine I have is fairly old and wont last much longer. The boat is also quite a good age but is in perfect condition so I would like to keep her. The price of diesel is considerably cheaper to run here so in the long run it makes sense to change over.

Would appreciate any thoughts or advice.

Re: Volco Penta Engine Replacement

The 200D is a gm 305 (I have a pair of them in my boat). Mine are late 70's early 80's vintage, 2bbl carb etc.

It can be replaced with either another 305, or a 350, which is dimensionally the same.

If it is raw water cooled, look for a rebuilt marine block of the same vintage.

If is is fresh water cooled you could replace it with a marine block or truck automotive block. Some will tell you the cams are too different on the truck automotive block. If you want to, swap the cam.

You can do a short or long block and bolt on your marine accessories like alt, pumps, starter, manifolds, carb, etc.

The V8 should be from the same period, or you run into bolt pattern trouble, dipstick location, that sort of thing. There are experts in that field and maybe they will chime in.

OMG !!!! This is exactly what I said during the 80's, but Volvo just would'nt agree and simply kept on making all those stupid AD and AQAD engines with 280 drives!

Here's a list of engines that WILL bolt right up to that drive, so now all you need to worry about is the gear ratio!
