Re: Voltage bank charging system!

I'm assuming you are talking about the BEP brand VSR.

I've been using one for about 6 months now. 1 main 'motor' battery and six house bank batteries.

It is brilliant. The best electrical device to hit the market in years!!

Aldo

Have not used the one from cabelas, but using a different brand, and I absolutely love it. SO MUCH BETTER than a switch. :D

Re: Voltage bank charging system!

Thanks guys,I might try this system!
My only concern is if it would shorten the life of my outboards charging system.
its design to charge the crank battery first then switch to trolling batt. after reaching a certain voltage 13.4 vlts then sw to trolling batt.
Is this how yours work?
Rich

Re: Voltage bank charging system!

Mine is an I/O, when my boat starts the two batteries are charged at the same time. I don't know much about an outboard alt, so I can't tell you if it will hurt it.

Rich, it directs the charge to batt #1 until the voltage reaches 13.7 then it switches to batt #2, if the voltage on batt #1 falls below 12.6 it switches back again. Batt #1 is always kept fully charged. It also isolates any possible starting spikes from anything that is connected to batt #2.

Aldo

Re: Voltage bank charging system!

Hey Rich, I instaled a cabella's, 12 amp 2 bank 4 stage charger this spring. I,ve only had it running now for less than a month, so I cant comment on durability, other than it is put together very well. The biggest plus is senses where you need the charge, and directs all 12 amps to the battery that needs it after the other is fully charged. On the older type of chager, a 12 amp charger would give you maximum of 6 amps per bank. Its supposed to be idiot proof. For less than 100$ almost sounds to good to be true.

Jim

Aldo,
Thanks for that, still a ways off getting its bottom wet again but the charging sytem is working perfectly with an external "Charge and Maintain" 10 amp battery charger.

Peter

I am in the middle of installing one of the BEP 2 bank systems right now.

Peterf - I see alot of switches with your module on your project boat. Can you explain what the switches are for next to the VSR?

Smoke

Re: Voltage bank charging system!

Hey Peter...if you haven’t done it already, I suggest getting a couple non-conductive covers over the [+] posts on those batteries, especially while you are working in there. Dropping one of those clamps, a wrench, or anything conductive across those battery posts can ruin your day…and your project boat.
