Voltage Issues

Well, It seems like I have another issue. 1990 mercruiser 5.0lx

I took my boat out Friday evening and noticed that the voltage gauge was reading about 11 volts. I thought that seemed odd as it is normally reading between 12-14 volts. It has been fluctuating for the past couple of months (dont know why)
The boat ran fine and I had no issues BUT by the end of the night it was reading just below 11 volts.

When I got home Friday night i pulled the battery and plugged it into the tricle charger. When I plugged it in it said it was fully charged....Hmmmmmm..... So I left it on the charger overnight anyway.

I put the battery back in the boat Sunday and it read about 11 volts again. I ran for about 5 hours on Sunday with some tubing and skiing. Some of the time the gauge would read 14 volts and when I put it back on the trailer it was reading 10 volts. What in the Hell??

So I pulled the battery again and also pulled the altranatorto get them both tested. I am guessing that the alt is going bad?? Does that seem right?

Also, does the gauge measure the battery voltage itself or is it measuring the output of the altranator?:confused::confused:

Thanks for the help in advance

Re: Voltage Issues

Get a DVM (Digital Volt Meter) and check the voltage. You may just have a bad gauge.

Re: Voltage Issues

The output of the altrenator is good...Measured 60 amps. Battery is also good after being tested.
I have a belt that has been squeeling on and off, just have not replaced it yet. Could that cause it?

weak belts will cause alt.to not charge.Get a digital volt meter to check voltage output at alt.
