I have a 1986 115 Mercury in-line 6, re-built in 1999. My voltage meter reads 12-13 volts when I turn the key but when I start the engine it shoots up to 15.5 volts, especially when I am increasing the RPM's. Than if I throttle back down the Voltage goes back down. In addition, if the Voltage meter reads 15.5 and I hit the power trim the volts go back down to 12.5 but than a few seconds later, goes back up to 15.5. Why is this happening? Do I need a new voltage regulator?

Re: Voltage Meter

Is there an easy way to test the voltage reg.? Also, is there any major damage that can occur if the voltage reg. is not working correctly? At this point the engine is running great! I am not sure if I want to fix "(it)" something if it is not broken. Any feedback on the potential damage that could occur if the voltage is too high??
