I have what i believe is a voltage regulator or it could be a rectifier but anyway where the wires go into the unit it seems to have blown out a small hole in the unit. The top of it is a softer material. I was wondering if it reads out ok on a meter if i can just fill the whole with some sort puddy and use it again??? any suggestions

sure doesn't sound like a regulator or rectifier. What motor is it, and what does the part look like? You may be looking at the temp sensor/sending unit (top of one of the heads on a V-4?)

Does the charging system function properly? Do you have charging voltage at the battery? If it has a hole burnt in it, its probably bad....

Re: Voltage Rectifier Problem

By the way, the reason a temp sensor came to mind (mine) was your reference to soft material. When an 85 hp Evinrude of mine overheated, the wax in the top of the sensor was soft and seemed to stay soft even after the problem was fixed (never replaced it -- maybe should have). I guess I can't imagine your system would be functioning normally if there was a hole burned in one of the electrical/charging components (!)

this thing sits on top the engine but under the fly wheel. Its sort of rectangle in shape bout 3/4 inch thick with 3 or 4 wires coming out of it. It gets cooled by the water in the engine.

can't help on that one -- Sorry. Let the list know what motor you have, and another owner might be a able to help. It sounds like you need a parts manual.
