What is the purpose of the voltage regulators on my motor. The reason I ask is I know the top one is bad. What causes VRs to go bad?

Re: Voltage Regulator 135 Merc 1994 Question

Your 135 with 2 voltage regulators is a 40 amp system each regulator works on 1/2 the output of the stator about 20 amps each they convert the AC voltage of the stator to DC voltage needed to charge the battery/batteries and keep the voltage to about 15 volts or less so the batteries won't be damaged from over charging.

Re: Voltage Regulator 135 Merc 1994 Question

"What causes the VR to go bad?". Who knows. It is mfgr defects or overloads. Mfgr defects could be component internal assembly or mfgr processes had a problem. Or it could be assy at the circuit board assy level, like a cold solder joint, or circuit was not properly cleaned and acid that wasn't properly removed attack the electronics. Other problems could be overstress caused by bad connections, or something that occurred, possibly that you caused; like maybe disconnecting a battery connection while the engine was running or the key was on, or you accidentally shorted something.

Who knows.
