Posted a thread in the Merc section but not getting much attention (http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=470908) so thought I'd ask here instead.

Short story, I've got a 1971 Merc 800 that does not have a factory voltage regulator. The stator is rated at 9A, and while running at 1/2 throttle or more, the voltage charging the battery is about 17V. Way too high for my comfort level, and I'm sure the electronics don't like it much either.

Been looking for a voltage regulator but am puzzled but the different types available. There are 4 wire, 5 wire and 6 wire types. All the spec sheets identify what model motors they are compatible with, but no other information. Hard to tell which type may be suitable for my application.

Any info or advice would be appreciated.

Re: Voltage regulator questions

I guess you would just need to contact each one and see what they recommend.

Have you tried turning on a small load to see if it woukd lower your voltage. Something like navigation lights.
They may bring the voltage down some or may blow your light blub.
Also could cause the stator to run hot.

Hope you will come back with your solution when you find it.

There are a lot of voltage regulators out there. Some you can regulate both voltage and current output. Ones 20 amps or less are not that expensive.
I seen seen some in Ham Amateur radio catalogs likes AES.

Good luck.
