Well it started as a suspect Tach which was quickly diagnosed as faulty chargin system. The stator is giving 16v A/C at idle and the ignition is giving 12v. The diode check failed and the stator is showing about 6ohms instead of the suggested .15 (if I remember correctly). I almost had a heart attack when I saw that mercury wanted $440 for the volt regulator/rectifier. There are aftermarket kits that look like a plate and two smaller units in place of the single large unit.
Anyone use any aftermarket parts in place of the factory part?
Any other source for this? Figures my motor came from the few years they used the high $ parts. The other question is that some reference a 4 yellow wire stator for the replacement kit and mine has only two ??

dont know if it will work with your setup or not, but i also have 2 wire stator, two yellow wires(ac voltage)

radio shack sells a 25amp full wave bridge rectifier for $3.29 that is air cooled and is far superior to the OEM model.

i an many of the other "inline 6" guys run them, as i also run one on my evinrude....

and they wont rust either....

i dont know if it will work for you, but its worth checking out.

I've replaced the factory rec/reg on my '86 175 with a 1 piece rec/reg CDI 194-5279 from www.seilermarine.com. Merc's design is poor. I had to fab a mounting plate for it to allow heat to transfer to the block as it doesn't fit where the old rec. goes, not too hard to do. This new system works great. Hook the 2 yellow wires in and the black & red wires give a perfect 14v out at any speed.
